My name is Catarina, however most people call me Cat, I am a 15 year old athlete with cerebral palsy. Having Cerebral palsy affects the way my brain communicates with my nerves and muscles.

When I was about 9 years old I competed in adaptive rock climbing with peak potential. We ended up flying to Georgia to compete nationally and I won third place. When the climbing team broke away, my parents found an adaptive sports team called the north jersey navigators.

“You’re disabled. You shouldn’t be doing that. Pole dancing is hot and you are NOT.” My immediate response was to tell him that pole is really difficult, but you could put any idiot on a bike.

Women & Sports: Jen Thorman, Cycling

I started riding for the GCC in 2013 because I was a student, not earning a great deal of money but felt the need to give back. In my 20's my Dad was diagnosed with Cancer and my Grandfather died of cancer. I am sure most people know someone who has had the same diagnoses or even lost someone too. I was already cycling a lot, so I thought why not?!

The only thing I have learnt to ‘give up’ is being too attached to a time or a place. I bring 3 goals to races and encourage others to consider these too: 1) get to the start line 2) get to the finishing line 3) enjoy the journey (on race day and in training). There’s a quote I saw running the London Marathon: ‘Greatness has no time limit’. How true that is.

"I think exercise and getting involved in moving your body should be part of everybody’s life every single day. It keeps us alive, it keeps us active and flexible and wakes us up. Our bodies weren’t made to do nothing all day, sit at desks, and be redundant."
Women & Sports: Dr. Alex Hynes, Muay Thai Boxer to Kokoda Challenge

Women & Sports: Dr. Alex Hynes, Muay Thai Boxer to Kokoda Challenge

I started boxing 6 or 7 years ago. I started with boxing initially, then transitioning to sparring. With sparring, you are all geared up and going at each other but it’s not a competition – not scoring points. You’re doing the motions of attack and defense but you’re using light blows. About five years ago, I wanted to keep going with Muay Thai but my body wouldn’t recover as quickly as I’d like – I was covered in bruises! I had fallen in love with the Muay Thai way of fitness but not so much with the high contact element of it. So now I work out five days a week.
