Women & Sports: Kat Nelson, Hiking Challenge
3 PEAKS is not only the name of the event but also what Kat Nelson and sister Annmarie were facing. 3 mountains across 3 states in 33 hours. This year they took to the challenge for the second time, since 2016. Not only did they accomplished the peaks and raise money for Whitelion, they also met some fantastic people on the way.
While the challenge is mentally and physically tough, it’s not about competing with each other but helping each other to the finish line. The 12 weeks of training, encouragement and assistance from fellow participants and leaders, defines the unique bonds that have people coming back.
To enter, each participant pays $250 and is required to raise a minimum of $1,250 each. Having completed her fundraising solo last year, the comradeship established in the first year facilitated the forming of team Vandelay Industries. With 5 members in the team, they were able to raise nearly $12,000.00 at the time of this blog. The overall goal for Whitelion to raise during the event is $300,000.00.
Whitelion is charity established over 16 years ago to fill a desperate need in the community, opening doors, opportunities, positive relationships and community connections for at risk youth aged between 10 to 25 years old, through practical support such as mentoring programs, education and employment.
Whitelion helps young people find the courage to seek a better future and aims to break the cycle of substance abuse, criminal activity and incarceration.
With 46,187 substantiated child protection reports each year, there are nearly 50,000 vulnerable young people in Australia and nearly 15,000 at high risk and 32,400 young people between 12 to 24 years who are homeless in Australia.
The young people Whitelion works with are disadvantaged members of our community who often come from extremely abusive families, including sexual, drug or alcohol abuse.
For many years, hundreds of highly vulnerable young people have been engaged and helped by Whitelion nationally on a one-to-one basis.
This years challenge was the 11th annual Three Peaks Challenge and ran in March 2017.
Reaching the summit of three peaks in Australia; Mt Bogong (VIC), Mt Kosciuszko (NSW – highest mountain in Australia) and Mt Tennent (ACT)
in just 33 hours over 2 days.
